Artificial Intelligence in Aerospace Systems

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and increasingly complex systems present new challenges to existing certification processes. Systems that incorporate Machine Learning (ML), a type of AI, are inherently different in that training data defines the behavior of the system, as opposed to hardware/software components traceable to explicit requirements.

Applications of AI/ML are exploding, creating a technology push into the aerospace domain that is driving an urgent need to develop new technologies, processes, tools, and guidance for assuring the safety of systems based on these technologies. AVSI has engaged in identifying and addressing critical areas of concern when trying to apply existing aerospace design assurance practices to ML-based systems, starting with AFE 87 – Machine Learning.

AFE 89 – Machine Learning Certification (new)

This project is a follow on to AFE 87 and will address recommendations raised in the AFE 87 Final Report. The objective is to start...
